Already Working
Bible Text: Romans 8:26–28"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."
— Romans 8:28The word "works" in Romans 8:28 is present tense and active. Not that God worked in the past, or will work eventually. He is working now, in all things, including the ones that do not look like they are going anywhere productive. The "all things" is comprehensive. It does not exclude the difficult, the prolonged, the confusing, or the ones you would not have chosen.
This is not a promise that all things are good. It is a promise that God works through all things toward a good end for those who are His. The difference matters. The thing you are in may not be good in itself. But it is not outside the reach of what God is able to work through.
A couple who had spent several years navigating something that did not resolve the way they had hoped described sitting together later and mapping what they could now see. Not all of it was clear. But enough was. They said they would not have recognized at the time that anything was being worked. From the inside, it had only felt like waiting. From a distance, they could see movement.
You may not be able to see what is being worked right now. That is common. The promise is not that you will see it clearly in the moment. It is that the working is happening. God is already in this. He is already moving. Close this week knowing that.
Reflect on This
- Looking at this week's theme, which truth about waiting was most needed for where you are right now? How will you carry it into the week ahead?
- Romans 8:28 says God works for the good of those who are called according to His purpose. How does knowing you are called and not accidentally in your current circumstances change how you hold what you are waiting through?
Lord, I cannot always see what You are doing. But I trust that You are working. In all things, including this one. I close this week in that trust. You are already in this.
